Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao Wan (Expellin Extract; Ligusticum with Green Tea Mix Pill) is an all purpose headache remedy, useful for occasional headaches, particularly when associated with cold symptoms. *

TCM Function:
Dispels pathogenic wind, warms the channels, frees the collaterals, stops pain.

Indications:
Use for pathogenic wind cold causing occasional occipital and temporal headache, dizziness, aching shoulders and neck, stuffy nose, and chills and fever. Also used for headaches in general, including those due to wind heat (common cold and flu); blood stagnation, including migraines; nervous headache; and frontal headaches due to food poisoning, indigestion, or sinus infection. It is primarily used for sudden headache due to exogenous wind-cold invasion. Use when such symptoms as chills, fever, and stuffy nose are prominent.*

This is a traditional formula for acute onset headache, particularly those due to exposure to pathogenic wind. It is popular as an all purpose headache remedy, including chronic headache, when due to excess rather than deficiency. Traditionally this formula is taken with green or black tea to induce sweating so as to resolve the exterior. Additional benefit is available by drinking while in a hot bath, followed by getting under bed covers to facilitate sweating.*

More Information

For the TCM Health Practitioner:
Pathogenic wind cold implies an exposure of the skin to wind and cold and is often contracted when the pores are open, such as following exercise, with subsequent exposure to cold or damp weather or air conditioning. Cold invades the channels at certain points along the shoulders, neck and head, with the most common symptom being acute headache. Wind cold may also directly invade the lung causing runny nose with clear watery discharge. Pathogenic wind cold is often the first stage in the development of the common cold. Pulses tend to be tight or wiry and floating.

Patent formulas are effective for pathogenic wind cold if administered immediately and in greater frequency then implied by the label. It is traditionally recommend to take a hot bath and drink hot tea when taking these remedies, to help eliminate the cold through sweating. In severe cases, getting under blankets following a hot bath is also recommended.

When administering products for pathogenic wind it is often best to discontinue other herbal products that one may have been taking, particularly tonic formulas.
