More Information
The word shen is often translated as "spirit", and disturbed shen implies that the spirit is agitated, especially as it affects the mind and the nervous system. Treatment of disturbed shen uses herbs that nourish heart blood and yin, or subdue heart yang.
symptoms and disorders include insomnia, restless sleep, palpitation,
tachycardia and heart arrhythmia, anxiety, and in some cases manic
behavior. Accompanying symptoms may include headache, dizziness,
vertigo, palpitations, poor concentration and forgetfulness. Disturbed shen can be due to excess factors such as heat, rising yang, or stagnation of blood or phlegm; or deficiency factors of blood, qi or yin. Heat can be involved in both excess and deficiency, causing agitation to the heart. Insomnia
may be caused by other disorders, including fever, asthma, cough or
pain, and in these cases, emphasis should be placed on the root illness.
Disturbed shen is not always due to heart patterns.
